After using the excellent Manfrotto 055PROB tripod for over 5 years for my landscape photography, I found myself searching for something more manageable. The weight and increased height with my Manfrotto 300n panoramic head attached made it a bit cumbersome during landscape outings that required long walks.

I wanted a tripod that was as sturdy as the 055PROB but with reduced weight and height. That’s when I discovered the Manfrotto 190XPRO3 from their new series. It’s 7 cm shorter and 0.4 kg lighter than the 055PROB, and with the legs fully extended, my camera is now at eye level without having to tip-toe or adjust the legs as I did with the 055.

A few new features I love about the 190XPRO3 include the quick lock system, which allows you to extend each leg fully with one hand, no need to unlock each leg section individually. This is especially convenient in cold environments when wearing gloves. The tripod also features a bubble level that can rotate around the center column, making leveling much easier. Additionally, the 190XPRO3 has an Easy Link connector for attaching accessories like LED lights, flash units, or reflectors.

While I haven’t needed this for my landscape work, I can see its potential for macro and studio photography.

All in all, the Manfrotto 190XPRO3 has proven to be a worthy replacement for my aging yet reliable 055PROB. It strikes the perfect balance of sturdiness and portability for my needs.
